I just came across this list: www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2007/10/01/the-twenty-five-most-underrated-guitarists/ and thought the Curmudgeon would be pleased with the top pick. I think a lot of those guys deserve the honor (NOT Kurt Cobain), but many of them are already on the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" (including Cobain -who was in the top 20) list Rolling Stone put out so people apparently can't read. Oh, and do yourself a favor by resisting the urge to click on that link to Rolling Stone's top 100 list; there is only pain on the other side. That is the most musically ignorant list I've ever had the misfortune of reading. God, I hate that magazine. Anyways, how do the denizens of The Fortress vote? I would add Sammy Hagar, Dr. Know (Bad Brains), Warren Fitzgerald (The Vandals), Zack Wylde, Ian Mackay (Fugazi), Bob Mould, Omar Rodriguez (Mars Volta), and Larry Lalonde (Primus) just off the top of my head to any list of underrated guitarists. Here's your chance to pimp your guys. Well?

Prince is number one?! Fuck yeah I'll agree with that - he never seems to get any respect in that field even though he's absolutley awesome on guitar.
I remember having a conversation along these sort of lines at a party about a year ago. I was at this guys house, sitting drunk on a couch while these four student types sat beside me talking about the best guitarist of all time.
I sat listening to all the usual names that get thrown around when I piped in with a typical drunken prick "know-all" voice; "yeah.. all those names you just mentioned there .. Prince smokes all of them." That was my sole contribution to the subject.
Because, really, I don't actually notice that much about guitar work, to be honest with you. I think you have to be into a particular genre to notice and appreciate these guitar masters, and that just ain't me.
Best song? Best album? Best artist? Best singer? Count me in. When it comes to judging guitarists - not The Curmudgeon. I imagine Wolfman and Ben would be the best candidates for this discussion, though.

Prince is not only an underrated guitarist, he's also an underrated pianoist, bass guitarist, drummer and singer! Least we forget he played ALL instruments on his first album, so the man knows how to make an arrangement. And I've said it to someone before, I know it...this is a man who's CREATED bands just to get all that material that he has written and composed over the years he's been playing. Even Prince's weaker songs are strong.

Another treat for our resident Prince fans: youtube.com/watch?v=Z5zOPGMIyMQ Wait for it. That, my friends is what we call guitar ownage. Notice the immediate energy surge as soon as The Purple One steps into view and begins that unbelievable solo. That guy really scares the shit out of me sometimes. Also note the unusual lack of rock guitar legends up there jamming on the Beatles classic at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Well, if you were a guitarist by trade would you want to share the stage with that guy?

;D That was AWESOME! ;D If that would have been a PS2 game it would be called GRAND THEFT GUITAR SOLO. There it was, a nice tribute sing-a-lomg with some "guitar greats" strumming along to the rythym when... POW! SMASH! OOOFFFF!Prince's guitar solo knocks the fucker out of the park and onto the freeway. I laughed so damned hard when he started in so causual yet dominating that I saw bright sparks flash before my eyes. The look on Petty's face was classic, too. He was like "Hey now!" And then he tries to keep on singing but Prince's guitar is going on and Petty's singing was like a whisper. Reminded me of the refrain in MY NAME IS PRINCE: In the beginning God made the sea But on the 7th day he made me He was tryin' to rest y'all when He heard the sound Sound like a guitar cold gettin' down I tried to bust a high note, but I bust a string My God was worried 'til he heard me sing
My name is Prince and I am funky My name is Prince the one and only - hurt me
Take that, naysayers!

Prince: "Hmmm. Nice show. I'll steal it."
That was awesome. Brilliant video, Trashy - not only had I never seen this, I had never heard of it either. Good find.
Gotta say, gents - The Curmudgeon is digging the Prince love on this website.

I was just channel-surfing one day and landed on that particular jam-session. Needless to say, my jaw dropped. As much as I despise the R&RHOF, I can seldom pass by these ceremonies because there are always solid gold performances like this that you'll never see again. "Prince Owns Everybody" (as I like to call this one) is definitely one of the most memorable. ;D

HAHAHA! Kurt Cobain as number 2? I don't need to read any more than that. Kurt was a great song writer but there was never anything remotely complex about his guitar playing. What a terrible choice. Of course, I'm probably just saying what everyone else is thinking.
I agree with Trashcanman on putting Zakk Wylde in there. I think Stevie Ray Vaughn, Al Pitrelli, and Dimebag Darrell should also be on there.

I'm fairly sure that Dime and Stevie Ray were on the "big boy" list. If not, than somebody needs to get fired. Pitrelli is a hell of a player, but the 80's guys tend to get overlooked because the music at the time was so faceless.
