Your favourite moments in comics..

[The Curmudgeon]

Now, I'm not talking specific events or story arcs (but feel free to include them), more little moments, comments or drawings that made that particular comic memorable.

There's a great story where Judge Dredd fights Dracula, and I remember reading it at quite a young age, oddly terrified of the drawings in a story I would read and re-read. Anyway, as per Dredd, there's some brilliant one-liners, like when Dredd aims his gun at one of the vampires and they say "you fool, your bullets cannot stop us", and he turns his gun to high explosive and quips, "maybe not, but they can make you pretty hard to put together again." And he eventually kills Drac with his gun again, this time by shooting him about twenty times in his chest... into the shape of a cross. Niiiiiiice.

Spidey gets most of the fanboy moments though, one in particular has him in full on split personality "the man is no more, I am the Spider" mode. And everything about it works; the writing is superb, the artwork absorbing. Spidey breaks down the door of a hotel where Carrion and Shriek are keeping Carrion's mother hostage. He stands in the doorway, dripping with rain, totally silent. The text to end the chapter just says "God help you if you get in my way." Fucking AWESOME.

Another cool moment is where Morbius gets attacked by some thugs in a park at night. He's got one guy by the throat and the other breaks a baseball bat right over his head. Morbius just turns, full close up on his ghastly face and says, "That.... was a mistake."

Last one from me for now, this time from The Scorpion, who for a few issues was pretty much unbeatable, destroying Luke Cage ("now hit the road, Private DICK!") and being made to look like some major threat. Peter Parker is in the Daily Bugle office, when suddenly the entire room starts to shake. Peter looks out the window and its the Scorpion, climbing up the wall by smashing his tail into the side. There's a fantastic close up on the Scorpion's demented, white-eyed face and he grins, "PEEK A BOO, PRETTY BOY!" Just great writing like that keeps those comics read and re-read.

Anyway, I'll turn the thread over to you now. What's been some of your favourite comic book moments?

During the Civil War, Spidey was fighting a Russian, The Titanium Man, in a suit sort of like Stark's and was taunting him by begging him to "say Moose and Squirrel!" I was already smirking and then Iron Man shows up to clean up and Titanium Man says "when your government turns on you...when you are hunted and driven out...I wonder--How will you feel the day you run errands for other people...for briefcases filled with money?" Stark gets right up in his grill and says "Say Moose and Squirrel. Just once." I laughed my ass off.

There's Deadpool hitting Kittie Pryde with a dragon punch which I've already recounted before. In Cable and Deadpool, he was traveling through alternate dimensions looking for Cable and wound up jumping to a place run by Mr. Sinister and spending days stuck in a lab tak. The first thing Wade does when he gets out and is faced with the supervillain is ask to use the bathroom. What follows is an entire page and the some of Sinister waiting around while listening to 'Pool relieve himself. When Wade gets out Sinister looks at him and says "Did you wash your hands?". Deadpool then has to go back in the bathroom to do so. That is some funny shit.

One more DP. The first time he meets Cable in the same series, he is about to try and kill him and Cable just says "Don't make me laugh while do this." and 'Pool says "Do What?" and then his head explodes "Scanners" style from Cable's psychic power. This same thing happens, maybe three times in the first few issues or so. the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

In the new X-Force, Wolfsbane was captured by her mutant exterminating father and programmed to kill Angel. When X-Force rescues her, she changes into a wolf and RIPS WARREN TO FUCKING PIECES. It's one of the most brutal things I've ever seen on a page. Later, she confronts her father again and he winds up standing in front of a winged statue or something so it kinda looks like he has wings like Angel's. Rahne's programming takes over and when she wakes up there is nothing but scraps left of the psycho. She ate her dad, dude. That is seriously fucked up.

In "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" Dwight launches an assault on a heavily-guarded mansion with the help of his Old Town friends. He winds up knocking the biggest, baddest dude in the place -whose been kicking his ass the whole book- out of a window. There's a shot of Miho jumping off of the roof and the next time we see them, the little Japanese girl is sitting cross-armed on the big gorilla's chest with her katanas pinning both of his hands to the ground like tent stakes. Sweeeet.

In Birds of Prey, Oracle was forced to blow up her headquarters and everything she held dear to try and save Batman during a fight with Black Mask -who had discovered the Clocktower. So she's having lunch with Huntress and Canary and talking about how they've lost everything and where to go form there and blah blah. So she says "Maybe we should just take some time to mourn" or something of that nature. There is one panel of all three Birds kind of looking sad with their heads down and then Oracle glares in a close-up and says "Okay that's enough of that, let's go kick some ass." Classic Babs.

In the Black Canary miniseries, the heroine goes head-to-head with Green Arrow nemesis Merlyn after he set in motion events that led to the apparent death of her surrogate daughter. She breaks his bow with a kick and he wraps the string around her throat and starts choking her. Speedy asks Arrow why he isn't helping and Ollie says "He belongs to my Black Canary now". Merlyn does his angry villain braggy thing and then sees Canary just glaring at him as she starts making a little humming noise in her throat. He starts ranting stuff like "Stop that! WHY AREN'T YOU DYING! STOP IT!" Canary vibrates her throat to the point where the bowstring snaps (she likely learned this technique from Lady Shiva) and makes Merlyn her bitch. He only survives because Arrow intervenes to save his life. Ownage!
