Curmudgeon, good if uncourageous choice of pseudonym! You must be very pleased that in the name of freedom of speech, you have managed to alienate many readers and all 'grannies'. (Baffled, stupid, sad, deranged and smelly - I don't believe you have ever even met a grandmother. Some of our best CEOs, economists, writers and artists are grandmothers. Didn't you realize?) Gratuitious insults of this sort do not get your point across. Try a little reasoned argument.

ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM AMAZON.COM
If Curmudgeon is British by birth, he is definitely following the tried and tested British path of 'build them up as high as you possibly can so that when you knock them down, they can have a much more spectacular fall'. We like to do it a lot in Britain. It's something of a national pass time.
Whilst I agree with many of his sentiments about the British press and the subsequent international furore over Miss Boyle, there is absolutely no doubt she has a wonderful voice and that, if you are into this kind of music, her album does belong alongside those of her genre. Just because he evidently DOESN'T like the music, doesn't really give him the right to lampoon her and belittle the people buying her album.
So I will be reporting this review to Amazon.

Hmmmm, given your clear contempt for Susan Boyle (and from the sounds of it - Americans and the rest of the world), I find it very hard to believe that you bought her cd at all. Therefore, what gives you the right to rate or comment on it? Furthermore, do some research before you ramble on about people you clearly know nothing about and this album that you clearly know nothing about. It was just released today so it has not already sold millions (though I'm sure it will). If it had already sold millions, that would be all over the news that you have such a negative, inaccurate, and warped view of. All this coming from another negative and jealous individual that is trying to use Susan's name to get hits on his/her own website. I have to laugh really (seriously I do). Do you have no talent or skill that would allow you to be successful or do you have to completely rely on going against the masses without an ounce of credibility to get your .01 seconds of attention (mind you unsuccessfully)? By the end of the day your rant of gibberish will be buried under the positive and truthful reviews that are sure to come from people who actually bought and listened to Susan's cd. Ciao ...whoever you are. Your name was too insignificant to soak into my memory long enough to remember it for closing.

ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM AMAZON.COM
If her talent is "average", then there should be hundreds of thousands of better singers out there in the UK alone, as a function of the total population on a normal curve. These people should be humming away in shopping centers all across Britain. To prove your point, it can be easy...come up with at least a few hundred undiscovered UK singers with Boyle's range, power and delivery...use some music teachers as judges. Take your time...We'll wait.

ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM AMAZON.COM
Okaaaay.. where to start on all of this? Honestly, I go away for a few hours and come back to this. Right, I'll reply to as many comments as I can, but if I don't reply to YOUR comment its because you're not worth it. Try harder to get my attention next time.
T. Todd - first of all, BIG fan of yours. You were awesome in Candyman. And I find your ABC of "Attitude, Character, Behaviour" (um.. shall you tell him or shall I?) a little rich when it comes to Boyle. So her subsequent mental break down and abuse of all those around her are GOOD examples, are they?
Paulie - I'll get right back to you after I've done time travelling to 1995 when "Get a Life" was considered an insult.
Jennifer - why "hate" to say it? Don't feel bad about siding with the Irresponsible Hate Monger. It's good for the soul, you know.
Molly - if listening to a Susan Boyle CD is the "experience of the century" for you may I recommend you purchase a good strong noose.
Fashionista - I'm surprised the "you must be jealous" comments took this long. A special Stan Lee inspired No-Prize of Most Unoriginal Boring Comment goes to YOU. Well done!
Alison M Buss - one of the best comments so far.
Gardenia - I ONLY review the bad things, genius. If you'd "scanned" my profile you would have found that out.
Leonard Benatti - I am fully aware people have never written a song (Sinatra, Elvis and Aretha Franklin being some names that spring to mind right now) but am I going to put some half-mad old bag from a reality show beside those names? Not likely.
LP - depends on what you mean. If you mean "vocalist" as "big lunged diva with a 10 grand dress and an orchestra behind her, then none. I have no time for the Celine Dion/Leona Lewis/Whitney Houston types. Borrrrrring.
Canopus - Hmmm... no.
J. Dodd - I don't recall EVER "building" up Susan Boyle. So what's your point?
Sneaker - I think you'll find, idiot, that her album has already broken records by being the most pre-ordered album in history, and HAS already sold over a million copies. And guess what? It WAS all over the news! Try and keep up with those better than you.
Dorothy Williams - awww, you're a sweetheart.
Deanne M Taylor - um.. sorry, what? I've to do what now?
And that's it for round one. Keep 'em coming! Roll up, roll up! Grind your teeth and clench your fists in frustration! Try and get your poorly worded arguement across without sounding like a moron! Hupla hupla hupla!

*roffles*
No. YOU didn't build her up, the British press (and much of the international press) did, and you appear to have largely enjoyed your little bit of knocking her down and stomping on the entrails.

So if I am definitely following that path that would have to mean I DID build her up only to knock her down. But, of course, I'm all about the knocking down part.
Which kind of kills your redundant arguement stone dead, "roffles" or not.

ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM AMAZON.COMYou make me smile, Mr. C. You really do. Note I said "good" example, not "perfect" example, of the "ABC's" of life. Susan was not perfect when we met her and has show other not perfect examples (as to what you are refering to, I have not heard, but I am not saying it didn't happen either). But, the fact that she is not perfect has been your point from the very start of your review. So, to your reply saying "her subsequent mental break down and abuse of all those around her", just proves my point...she is real and people identify with that. I'm sure she will rise above all the pressure that she (apprently) broke under...and maintain good "ABC's" of life...again, I said "good"...not perfect. No one person in this world is perfect in every way.

You're wrong. She does have an amazing voice. That's the cause for all the excitement. She's not a microphony sporting a cheek antler; the voice is REAL, and that's what sets her apart from all the other computer generated "voices" of our time.

ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM AMAZON.COM
I read all 182 or so of Curmudgeon's reviews. He clearly subscribes to the "99% of everything is crap and deserves 1-star" school of reviewology. I'm inclined to agree with his ratings on the things he chooses to rate, mostly. I read his review of Susan Boyle's CD several times. Read it carefully...he has a point and I see it. Much of what he say's has more to do with our media crazed society than with the particulars of Susan Boyles talent. So, I give her a higher rating, say three stars, based on all the music I listen to.
So what. I'm an old guy who has a soft spot for rags to riches fantasies, more so when they are true. Susan Boyle, Paul Potts, and all the other "yesterday's nobodies" who prostrate themselves in front of a hostile audience, then have the audacity to surprise that audience and become "today's celebrities" get my nod. We live in such a society...instant lotto winners...instant fame...viral video sensations...I can live with it.
Did I shed a tear as I watched this droll little curmudgeonly lady metamorphize forth on the wing of her voice? Absolutely! I still get chills when I think of her performance. I'll probably download a couple of her songs to rekindle those emotions. Can she sing? Of course she has a nice voice. Will her fame extend beyond her fifteen minutes? I don't know. Each of us deserves our chance...when the place and time come calling. Maybe I am one of Curmudgeon's "shallow people".
